All butterflies have six legs and feet and their taste sensors are located in the feet, and by standing on their food, they can taste it. Butterflies go through complete metamorphosis - egg, larva, pupal stage and adult butterfly. In adult stage they can live from a week to a year depending on the species. Butterflies are characterized by their scale-covered wings. The coloration of butterfly wings is created by minute scales. These scales are pigmented with melanins that give them blacks and browns, but blues, greens, reds and iridescence are usually created not by pigments but the microstructure of the scales. Many butterflies migrate over long distances, a distance of about 4,000 to 5,000 kilometres.
