SpongeBob printables. Stephen Hillenburg initially conceived SpongeBob in 1984, while he was studying marine biology. When SpongeBob SquarePants aired in 1999, it had gained a significant enough number of viewers to be considered popular in the ratings, reaching worldwide popularity by 2000.
