Tom and Jerry are 162 theatrical shorts that centered on a never-ending rivalry between a housecat Tom (a Russian Blue tomcat) and a small brown house mouse Jerry who always lives in close proximity to him. Many of the title cards show them smiling at each other which seems to depict a love-hate relationship rather than the extreme annoyance each displays towards the other in each cartoon. In his attempts to catch Jerry, Tom often has to deal with the intrusions of Butch (scruffy black alley cat) who wants to catch and eat Jerry, and Spike, an angry, vicious guard bulldog who tries to attack Tom for bothering his son Tyke while trying to get Jerry. The characters themselves regularly transform into ridiculous but strongly associative shapes.
